Master's programme in Choreography

The Master of Choreography programme is a two-year, full-time course of study based on a Bachelor’s degree in dance or an equivalent education and/or experience. The programme is designed for students who wish to specialise and challenge themselves in choreography—artistically, methodologically, conceptually, and contextually. It prepares students to work independently as creative artists and choreographers within various traditions of dance as a performing art, and in collaboration with practitioners from other artistic disciplines. The programme emphasises experimental and dialogue-based learning with a strong focus on reflective thinking. Students will develop their choreographic understanding and practice, both artistically and contextually. The course highlights the importance of interdisciplinary cooperation and communication in choreographic work and introduces students to written reflection and documentation. The programme also introduces and prepares students for artistic research and development, including the possibility of pursuing a PhD, through research-based teaching. It is locally anchored while placing strong emphasis on international network building. This includes an inter-Nordic component offered in partnership with other Master of Choreography programmes in Stockholm, Helsinki, and Copenhagen. This Nordic component is integral to the programme and provides students with a broader and academically robust learning environment, opportunities to engage with selected performance venues in the region, and access to Nordic and international networks. The Master’s programme equips students with the competence to work as choreographers and creative artists—whether as freelancers or within established companies and institutions—as well as in artistic research and development, and as active contributors to the performing arts field and society at large. The programme corresponds to 120 ECTS credits and qualifies students for admission to the PhD in Artistic Research and other relevant doctoral programmes.
