Master's Programme in Spanish Language and Latin-American Studies

On the Master's programme in Spanish Language and Latin American Studies, you immerse yourself in the Spanish language and in Latin American literature, while studying the historical processes that have shaped today's complex Latin America. Why choose this programme? The programme brings together three disciplines, Spanish linguistics, Latin American literature, and Latin American history, and lets you build analytical and methodological skills across all three. The master's programme is taught in Spanish, and your thesis will be written in Spanish too. You'll join a small cohort of students at the Department of Foreign Languages, with your own space in the reading room and close contact with faculty throughout the two years. What will you learn? You'll work with questions such as how historical processes explain today's complex Latin America, how the continent's diversity of people is reflected in language, culture, and society, and what status the Spanish language holds in the world today. Your Master's thesis is an independent research project on a topic of your choice within Spanish linguistics, Latin American literature, Latin American history, or subject didactics. Fieldwork to collect data may be relevant depending on your topic. Student life Your teaching takes place in the heart of Bergen city centre, through lectures, seminars, group work, and individual guidance. At the end of your second semester, you'll attend an all day conference before work on the thesis begins. On campus you have access to the reading room, library, colloquium room, fitness centre, canteen, café and student bar, along with a wide range of student organisations to get involved in. Study abroad You can spend your second semester as an exchange student at a partner university in Mexico, Peru, Argentina, Spain, or Chile, and many students combine this with fieldwork for their thesis, gaining language training and cultural experience along the way. Career paths Graduates of this programme have gone on to work in sales, media, and publishing, private sector business, public institutions, cultural life, translation, and humanitarian organisations both in Norway and abroad. A Master's degree also qualifies you to apply for a PhD.
